Defending champion Dayne Moore will not return to the Uganda Open Pro Championship as the Johnnie Walker Pro Open tees off at Lugazi Hills Golf Course and Country Club on September 9.
Moore, who claimed last year’s title at Entebbe Club with a three-under-par finish ahead of Rwanda’s Celestine Nsanzuwera and Kenya’s Dismas Indiza, has been sidelined by a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Speaking to NBS Sport, Moore admitted he was eager to return but now faces a long recovery.
“I was looking forward to coming there as well and defending my title. Unfortunately, I won’t be coming this year. I ruptured my Achilles so have a long road to recovery,” Moore said.
The Zambian also praised Lugazi Hills, which will stage the Open for the first time. “It’s a beautiful course and I would have loved to be part of this special event,” he added.
Moore’s absence opens the door for a new champion at the Pro Open, which has drawn a strong field from across the region.
The tournament is set to mark its debut at Lugazi Hills with anticipation around how the challenging new course will test the professionals.
