Uganda’s athletics star Joshua Cheptegei has confirmed he will not compete at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled for September 13–21.

Speaking during a training session with teams preparing for both Tokyo and the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Spain, Cheptegei explained that he needed to step back to manage the pressure that comes with preparing for a world championship.

“It was not my intention to run the world championship this year because ten years ago I have been working under pressure. For me to be healthy again, I didn’t want that type of mental stress. It’s very important for an athlete to consider health first,” Cheptegei said.

Despite his withdrawal, the world record holder expressed confidence in the Ugandan team heading to Tokyo, praising their spirit and readiness to compete at the highest level.

“This team is capable of bringing glory to the country because they are in high spirits and ready for the championships. I urge Ugandans to rally behind them and show full support,” he added.

Cheptegei’s decision highlights the growing emphasis among elite athletes on mental health and long-term well-being, even amid the pressures of international competition.
