NEC advanced to the next round of the FUFA Super 8 after defeating Express 2-1 in Tuesday’s second-leg clash at Wankulukuku, progressing on the away goals rule following a 2-2 aggregate draw.
Express had taken a narrow advantage after winning the first leg 1-0, but NEC turned the tie around with a much sharper performance in the return match.
Right-back Atendele Geriga provided the breakthrough in the 28th minute, delivering a pinpoint cross that young forward Emmanuel Kulanga headed home. Captain Marvin Kavuma then punished a defensive lapse from Express, firing into the top corner to double the lead before halftime.
Express pulled one back late through a slick move in the 88th minute, but it proved too little, too late, as NEC held on to secure progression.
The victory also ensured NEC will not finish among the bottom four, since teams eliminated in the first round automatically occupy those positions.
Coach Hussein Mbalangu made several changes in the second half, handing minutes to Joseph Dhata, Gideon Odongo, Media, Jarieko, and Ajo as he continued to integrate new signings.
Siraje Ssentamu partnered Joseph Sseremba in midfield, while Paul Mucureezi and Kavuma worked the flanks in a system that continues to take shape ahead of a busy schedule.
NEC will now face the winner between URA and Kitara in a single-leg semifinal at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, this Saturday, with kick-off set for 7 PM.
Beyond the Super 8, NEC also have their eyes on continental duty, with a CAF Confederation Cup clash against Nairobi United scheduled for September 20 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
