Nile Special and PAU Unveil 2025 National Pool Open in Kampala

The 2025 Nile Special National Pool Open Championship was launched on Wednesday at Nile Breweries Headquarters in Luzira, confirming its place as Uganda’s premier pool competition.

Organized by the Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) in partnership with Nile Special, this year’s edition will attract more than 10,000 participants nationwide.

The competition will culminate in a grand finale at Lugogo Indoor Arena, where winners in both the men’s and women’s categories will each drive away in a brand-new car, alongside cash prizes, pool tables, and other rewards.

Nile Special Brand Manager Eric Malinga reaffirmed the sponsor’s long-term investment in the sport, describing pool as a unifying game that has become central to Uganda’s sporting culture.

“For over a decade, Nile Special has always believed in elevating pool in Uganda as a sport that unites communities in a special way. Our renewed partnership with PAU ensures that players across the country get the opportunity to shine while fans enjoy unforgettable competition,” he said.

The tournament’s qualifying structure emphasizes inclusivity, with men’s qualifiers starting at 320 centers before narrowing down to 40 regional hubs, while women will begin directly at nine regional centers. The process will determine the final 128 men and 32 women who will compete for national glory in Kampala.

PAU Chairman Bob Trubish praised Nile Special’s role in shaping the game’s growth since 2009, noting the sponsorship’s impact on both the National Open and the National Pool League. He highlighted the return of the championship’s momentum after disruptions between 2018 and 2022.

“The 2025 National Open is set to be the biggest in our history. Nile Special’s support has enabled us to give thousands of players across Uganda the chance to compete and dream big,” Trubish said.

The championship’s legacy remains a central theme, with past winners such as Mansoor Bwanika, Caesar Chandiga, Fahad Ssewankambo, and Alfred Gumisiriza shaping its history. Bwanika, the 2024 and 2018 champion, and defending women’s champion Kisakye Marion are both confirmed to return this year.

Trubish urged players and fans alike to embrace the 2025 journey. “To the players, this is your stage to showcase your skill and determination. To the fans, I encourage you to support your favorite players and witness the incredible talent our country has to offer. Let’s make this the most memorable championship yet,” he said.
