Rooney: Manchester United “Got Worse” Under Amorim

Former Manchester United captain and record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has stated that the club has “got worse” under head coach Ruben Amorim, who was appointed on November 1, 2024.

Speaking on “The Wayne Rooney Show,” Rooney voiced his concern after United’s recent 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City, where many fans were seen leaving before the final whistle.

He questioned the team’s progress and the lack of visible patterns that would lead to future improvement.

“It is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression,” Rooney said.

The article highlights the team’s struggles since Amorim’s arrival, noting they have earned just 31 points from 31 games, placing them among the worst-performing teams in the Premier League during that period.

Their 36% win rate across all competitions is the worst for any permanent United manager since World War Two.

United’s poor form has continued into the 2025-26 season, with the team collecting only four points from their first four league fixtures—their worst start since 1992-93.

They also suffered a humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby.

Rooney also criticized Amorim’s steadfast commitment to a 3-4-3 formation, specifically the use of only two central midfielders, which he believes is causing the team to be “overrun and overpowered” in the midfield.
