Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has expressed regret after clashing with Liverpool fans following his team’s 3-2 Champions League loss.
The incident occurred moments after Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute.
Simeone was seen protesting to the fourth official and had to be separated from a section of the home supporters by stewards before being sent off.
In a post-match press conference, the manager stated, “I regret the part I played,” but also claimed he had endured “insults for the whole game.”
He added that managers should be protected from such abuse and hoped Liverpool would take action to identify those responsible.
The dramatic conclusion followed a match where Liverpool initially led 2-0, only for Marcos Llorente to score twice for Atletico before van Dijk secured the win.
