Eintracht Frankfurt staged a remarkable comeback to secure a convincing 5-1 victory over Galatasaray in their opening UEFA Champions League match.
The home team, playing in a superb atmosphere at Deutsche Bank Park, initially fell behind in the eighth minute to a goal from Galatasaray’s Yunus Akgun.
However, Frankfurt quickly turned the tide with three goals in the final 12 minutes of the first half.
An own goal from Davinson Sanchez leveled the score, followed by a goal from 19-year-old Can Uzan just before halftime.
A second own goal for Galatasaray, this time from Wilfried Singo, put Frankfurt ahead 3-1 at the break.
In the second half, Jonathan Burkardt and Ansgar Knauff added two more goals for Frankfurt, bringing the final score to 5-1.
The victory places Eintracht Frankfurt at the top of the league phase after the first of eight match weeks.
The defeat was Galatasaray’s first loss since March 29, ending a 13-game winning streak.
