World Athletics President Calls for Calendar Change Due to Climate Change

The global sports calendar may need a major overhaul to combat the effects of climate change, according to World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.

Following the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where athletes struggled with extreme heat and humidity, Coe suggested that events like marathons may need to be moved to different times of the year to protect athletes.

Coe noted that a World Athletics study found 70% of athletes believe climate change is impacting their training and competitions. He stated that governments “haven’t really stepped up to the plate” on the issue.

In addition, Coe confirmed that a gene-testing protocol for all female competitors was implemented and will remain in place.

Looking forward, the organization will launch its inaugural “Ultimate Championships” in Budapest next year.

The event will offer a $10 million prize pot and serve as a testing ground for new ideas to grow the sport. According to Coe, this new competition is crucial as the sport can’t afford a year without a major event.

Legendary sprinter Usain Bolt supported this move, calling it a “good start” for the sport’s evolution.
