Three weeks after his £18.1 million deadline day move from Royal Antwerp, Manchester United’s new goalkeeper Senne Lammens is yet to make his debut, sparking questions about head coach Ruben Amorim’s plan.
The 23-year-old Belgian was signed over World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez and brings impressive stats, including a 77.4% save percentage last season in the Belgian Pro League.
However, Lammens is being held back, despite current No. 1 Altay Bayindir’s struggles.
Opta data shows Bayindir ranks low among Premier League keepers this season, with a mere 50% save percentage and having conceded more goals than expected.
Amorim has cited the need for a strong, experienced keeper in the present moment. The situation is complicated by United’s early EFL Cup exit, which removed the possibility of a “soft landing” debut in a lesser competition.
With no cup games until January, Lammens’s first appearance will likely come in the highly pressurized Premier League, either against Brentford on Saturday or Sunderland on 4 October.
Former United keeper Roy Carroll has cautioned patience, urging the club to “give him time and let him grow.”
The question remains: when will the promising new signing finally be trusted with the gloves?
