Former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has credited his wife Coleen with saving his life, revealing he struggled severely with alcohol during his playing career.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the 39-year-old football legend admitted his drinking became so excessive that he believes Coleen’s presence was essential.
“I honestly believe if she weren’t there I’d be dead,” Rooney said.
Rooney, who retired in 2021, described himself as a “binge drinker” who would consume alcohol for “two days straight” after matches and before training.
He stated that he didn’t feel he could turn to anyone else but emphasized his wife’s crucial support.
“She’s helped me control that massively. She’s managed me because I needed managing.”
