The SMACK League returned with a bang on Sunday as Season Eight kicked off at the IUEA sports ground in Kansanga, Kampala, delivering goals, music, and plenty of Guinness-branded fun.
Defending champions Alks were held to a goalless draw by Blockowners in a tense opener, while debutants Spartans pushed hard but lost 2-1 to Pirates.
Mighty Zimbaz announced their intentions early with a 4-1 victory over Devils, Gerald Kawooya bagging a hat trick. Gladiators eased past Knights 2-0 thanks to Emma Masawi’s brace, and Phantomz edged Zuluz 2-1 in a bruising contest decided by strikes from Mark Muhindo and Crispus Kato.
Elite beat Outkasts 2-0 behind a double from Maxwell Batte, while Cyclones rallied to stun Vikings 3-2 in a five-goal thriller.
A new pooling system kept the competition lively, grouping alumni teams by class years to encourage old rivalries and quick-fire matches.
Away from the pitch, Janzi Band and DJ LB kept fans moving with live music and throwback mixes, while Guinness Matchday brought English Premier League action to big screens on site. Arsenal supporters roared as their side beat Newcastle 2-1, and Aston Villa fans celebrated a 3-1 comeback win over Fulham.
League marketing chief David Kawooya said the curtain-raiser captured the SMACK League’s blend of sport and entertainment. “Season Eight has started on a high, and with Guinness backing us, fans can expect even more excitement every matchday,” he said. Mercy Atwongyeire of Uganda Breweries added that the partnership celebrates friendship, passion, and community.
The SMACK League continues every two weeks, promising more goals, music, and Guinness-fueled Sundays through the season.
