The long-awaited Hoima City Stadium is nearly complete, with works now standing at 95 percent, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has announced.
Following his latest inspection tour, Ogwang confirmed that Turkish contractor SUMMA will hand over the facility to government by the end of October, well ahead of the original schedule.
He noted, however, that the stadium will remain closed to the public until all finishing touches are completed.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to officially commission the $129 million stadium in December, during his visit to Bunyoro on December 10 and 11 as part of his campaign program for the 2026 General Elections.
The 20,000-seater stadium is part of Uganda’s broader preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and is already being touted as a transformative sports hub for western Uganda.
Alongside football, the facility will accommodate athletics, rugby, and other major events, with additional amenities including an indoor arena, training pitches, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and outdoor courts.
“The completion of Hoima Stadium marks a turning point for sports infrastructure in Uganda. It will not only serve as a venue for Afcon 2027 but also help raise the profile of Hoima as a sports and economic center,” Ogwang said.
