British number four Sonay Kartal has secured the biggest win of her career, defeating world number five and fourth seed Mirra Andreeva at the China Open.
The 23-year-old, ranked No. 81, triumphed in a thrilling three-set match, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5, to reach the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time.
The victory marks Kartal’s first-ever win against a Top 10 player.
“She made me play my best tennis today,” Kartal said, “but I’m super happy with the level I managed out there.”
Kartal will next face world No. 27 Linda Noskova for a place in the semi-finals.
