Uganda failed to secure qualification for a second straight T20 World Cup after suffering defeats to hosts Zimbabwe and regional rivals Tanzania.

Sharma, 55, a former Indian cricketer, was appointed in April 2024 on a three-year deal to succeed South African coach Laurence Mahatlane, who had played a key role in developing the sport in Uganda. His departure comes just 18 months into his tenure.

In a statement released on Saturday, Cricket Uganda expressed gratitude for Sharma’s service, saying: “Cricket Uganda wishes to sincerely thank Abhay Sharma for his dedicated service as Head Coach of the Cricket Cranes from April 2024 to October 2025.”

Despite the disappointing qualifiers, Sharma’s reign had notable highlights.

Under his guidance, Uganda made its first-ever appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup, impressed in the Challenge League B, and registered memorable victories in international tours.

The association praised his leadership, commitment, and passion, noting that his impact had “left a lasting legacy” on Ugandan cricket.

Cricket Uganda confirmed it will now begin the search for a new head coach as the Cricket Cranes set their sights on qualifying for the 2028 ICC T20 World Cup in New Zealand.
