Russell “Ready for Championship Fight” After Singapore Triumph

Mercedes driver George Russell has confidently declared himself “ready to fight for a championship” after claiming a dominant victory at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, 5 October 2025.

Russell, who clinched his second win of the season, finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

The victory marked a personal milestone, coming two years after he crashed out of third place on the final lap at the same circuit.

“I’m a very different driver today… I feel more complete, more confident,” said Russell, who is now fourth in the championship standings.

He attributed his improvement to experience and a more relaxed approach, noting he felt no extra pressure despite the high stakes. “I feel ready to take it to my next step,” he asserted.

The win comes as Russell’s future with Mercedes is set to be secured. Although his contract expires this season, Team Principal Toto Wolff confirmed a new deal is imminent, likely to be announced before the United States Grand Prix on 17-19 October.

Wolff hailed Russell’s performance: “He’s been formidable this year. I haven’t seen mistakes… that becomes the dominant formula and that is what we’ve seen here.”

Russell admitted the victory was “so unexpected” given Mercedes’ recent struggles, highlighting the need to immediately analyze the performance boost.

His flawless drive from pole, helped by Verstappen’s initial tyre choice, was instrumental in holding off a challenging Norris for the entire race distance.
