British number one Emma Raducanu retired from her Wuhan Open first-round match today due to illness and dizziness, struggling severely with the hot and humid conditions in China.
Trailing American Ann Li 6-1, 4-1, the 2021 US Open champion called for a trainer to check her blood pressure and temperature before withdrawing.
The WTA cited dizziness as the reason for the retirement.
This early exit, her first opening-round loss since March, hurts the world number 30’s chances of securing a seeding for the upcoming Australian Open.
The incident follows other heat-related issues on the tour this week, including Jannik Sinner’s retirement due to cramp in Shanghai.
Li will now advance to the second round.
