Uganda’s cricket community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures, Baker Elonge, who passed away early this morning at Jinja Referral Hospital.

Cricket Uganda confirmed his death in a heartfelt message, describing him as “a mentor, builder, and devoted servant of the game.”

The association expressed condolences to his family, friends, and all those he inspired throughout his long service to Ugandan cricket.

Elonge, who once chaired the Uganda Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association, was widely regarded as a pillar of the sport’s growth, particularly in the eastern region.

Beyond officiating matches, he played an instrumental role in nurturing young talent and organizing grassroots competitions that expanded the game’s reach across communities.

A memorial tribute shared by Cricket Uganda captured his influence perfectly, calling him “a mentor, builder, and servant of the game” whose work “shaped the future through coaching, tutorship, and development.”

Elonge’s dedication spanned decades, from local district cricket in Iganga to officiating international fixtures such as the Uganda T20 Tri-Series.

His legacy, colleagues say, lies not only in the matches he umpired but in the players and officials he mentored along the way.

Cricket Uganda’s statement concluded with a simple but powerful message: “Rest well, Baker — your impact endures.”
