Lionel Messi put on a masterclass for Inter Miami, scoring twice and providing an assist in a dominant 4-0 victory over Atlanta United on Saturday.
The performance came just a day after the 38-year-old Argentina captain was rested by his national team for a friendly against Venezuela.
Messi’s brace elevated him to the top of the MLS scoring charts with 26 goals, two ahead of his nearest rival.
Miami coach Javier Mascherano confirmed he spoke with Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni to secure Messi’s release, as Scaloni had decided to rest him for the friendly.
Mascherano praised his star player, stating he was “ready to do it” and calling him a “very special player.”
The win solidifies Inter Miami’s position for the play-offs, leaving them tied on points with second-placed FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference.
