Cape Verde Become Second-Smallest Nation to Qualify for World Cup

Cape Verde has etched its name into football history, becoming one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

The Blue Sharks sealed the feat on Monday night with a resounding 3–0 victory over Eswatini at the Estádio Nacional de Praia, a result that sent the island nation into jubilation.

Dailon Livramento broke the deadlock shortly after halftime before Willy Semedo doubled the lead minutes later. Veteran defender Stopira put the result beyond doubt deep into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations across Praia and beyond.

The win ensured Cape Verde finished top of CAF Group D with 23 points, four ahead of continental powerhouse Cameroon, who were forced to settle for a playoff spot. For a nation of just over half a million people, it marks an extraordinary achievement, a football fairy tale written from the Atlantic Ocean.

As fireworks lit up the capital, fans poured into the streets waving flags, singing, and dancing late into the night. Cars honked in celebration, and the country’s president declared it a “moment of unity, pride and joy for every Cape Verdean.”

Infantino’s Message of Praise

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was quick to send his congratulations to the team and nation, describing the qualification as “a historic moment not only for Cape Verde but for world football.”

“Your flag will fly and your anthem will be heard at the greatest FIFA World Cup ever,” Infantino said. “This qualification reflects years of dedication and development. Your players and coaches have shown what can be achieved with vision, hard work, and belief. Cape Verde’s stars will now inspire a new generation across your islands.”

A Decade in the Making

Cape Verde’s rise has been a decade-long journey. After qualifying for their maiden Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, where they reached the quarter-finals, the Blue Sharks have since become a respected force in African football.

Their consistent performances in 2015, 2021, and 2023 hinted at the potential now realized on the biggest stage.

Head coach Pedro “Bubista” Brito credited his players’ mentality and the support of the people for the milestone:

“We are a small country, but our dreams are big. This qualification is for every Cape Verdean, at home and abroad. We’ve shown that anything is possible.”

Eyes on 2026

Cape Verde now joins Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, and Tunisia as Africa’s confirmed representatives for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

For the island nation, this is more than a football achievement, it’s a symbol of perseverance, unity, and the limitless power of belief.
