Aston Villa have barred all Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending their Europa League match on November 6th at Villa Park, following a “high risk” security classification by West Midlands Police.
The ban was imposed by the Safety Advisory Group due to police concerns about managing potential protests and public safety, citing a history of violence and hate crime offences during a 2024 Ajax vs. Maccabi Tel Aviv match in Amsterdam, which involved “antisemitism, hooliganism, and anger” over the war in Gaza.
The move has drawn swift condemnation from high-profile politicians. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called it “the wrong decision,” stating the police should ensure all fans can enjoy the game safely.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch labeled it a “national disgrace.”
West Midlands Police defended the decision as a necessary measure based on “current intelligence and previous incidents” to mitigate risks to public safety.
