The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has suspended the proposed new format for the 2025/2026 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season following consultations with clubs, sponsors, and the league board.
In a statement issued after a meeting with Uganda Premier League (UPL) stakeholders, FUFA confirmed that Rule 14:4-12 of the FUFA Competition Rules 2025, which outlined the new format, will not be applied this season.
The decision comes after weeks of debate and concern from clubs and fans over the recently announced league reforms, which FUFA say were meant to reshape Uganda’s top-tier competition.
FUFA said the suspension is intended to give all stakeholders more time to fully understand and appreciate the reforms through targeted sensitisation efforts.
“The suspension will allow stakeholders more time to understand the new UPL reforms through various forms of sensitisation,” FUFA stated.
The move follows a boycott from fans who have left stadiums empty.
