Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) president Moses Muhangi received a wave of support from the boxing community over the weekend as he heads into nomination for the Kampala Central parliamentary seat.
During Week 13 of the Uganda Boxing Champions League at Club Obligato, several coaches, active boxers, and former athletes publicly rallied behind Muhangi, praising his leadership and commitment to developing the sport.
Muhangi, who announced months ago that he would contest as an independent candidate, is expected to be nominated on Wednesday.
Coaches across the sport lauded Muhangi for transforming boxing in Uganda, saying his vision and management have improved both organization and welfare in the sport. They expressed optimism that he could deliver similar progress for Kampala if elected.
Boxers also joined in the show of solidarity. Fresh off his win in the main bout against Kasasa Isaac, Nerrick Tumusiime dedicated his victory to Muhangi, wishing him success in his political journey.
Other fighters echoed the sentiment in post-fight interviews, highlighting the federation president’s role in improving their livelihoods and opening up new career opportunities.
Former boxer Raymond Ssentongo also reflected on how far the sport has come, crediting Muhangi for the revival and professionalism seen in recent years. He expressed confidence that Muhangi’s energy and leadership could bring fresh ideas to Kampala’s development.
Speaking to NBS Sport, Muhangi confirmed he will hold his maiden campaign rally in Kamwokya after his nomination on Wednesday, officially kicking off his bid for the Kampala Central seat.
