Ten Ugandan boxers will take to the ring on Monday, October 20, as the Zone 3 Boxing Championships in Kenya enter the knockout stage, with medal hopes on the line.
The tournament has drawn fighters from 12 countries across East and Central Africa, setting the stage for intense regional competition.
Team Uganda will feature in ten quarterfinal bouts, each crucial in determining their progression toward the medal rounds. Among the headline fighters is team captain Mulungi Khasim, who will face Badibanga Badiyanyama of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 57kg category.
Other key bouts include Kanabi Alex against Ethiopia’s Ermivas Mesfin in the 67kg division, while Ojek Alfred meets Rwanda’s Ndagishimye Patrick in the 71kg class.
In the 60kg bracket, Mukwaya Edward and Adriko Jimmy will take on Kenya’s Joseph Shigali and Maina Ethan respectively, both hoping to silence the home crowd.
Also in action are Maninoral Farahat, who meets Aliuce Vicent of Kenya in the 63.5kg category, and Matovu Livingstone, squaring off with Kevin Maina in the 51kg division.
In the women’s lineup, Muduwa Brenda faces Nkelani Bawala Carine of DRC in the 50kg category, while Kato Kazibwe and Aziz Ringo will contest the 48kg and 92kg divisions against Nkelani Tsimba (DRC) and Emmanuel Agustino (Tanzania) respectively.
The Ugandan contingent, guided by the national coaches, is aiming to build on recent momentum from domestic competitions such as the Uganda Boxing Champions League.
The team’s performances on Monday will be key in determining the country’s medal prospects as the championships move into the semifinals.
