Presidential candidate Mubarak Munyagwa has taken aim at football governance in Uganda, promising a major shake-up in the sports sector if he becomes president.
Speaking in his trademark fiery style, Munyagwa said his first order of business would be to direct Magogo to resign from FUFA, accusing the FUFA President of mixing personal interests with national football matters.
“If my brother Magogo is in the next Parliament and I am the President, I will direct him to resign from FUFA with immediate effect,” Munyagwa said.
He also vowed to remove FUFA Executive Member Rogers Mulindwa and any sports administrators holding political positions.
“I’ll fire every sports head who’s in Parliament,” Munyagwa declared, adding that sports leadership should be left to professionals, not politicians chasing power.
The outspoken politician also said he would change the color of the Uganda Cranes jersey, arguing that the current yellow is “too much” and doesn’t represent the country’s diversity.
Munyagwa credited former FUFA boss Lawrence Mulindwa for laying the foundation for Uganda’s football growth, saying Magogo was merely lucky to inherit a thriving system.
“Magogo found Ugandan football on the road to success thanks to Lawrence Mulindwa. Vipers has given so much to the national team. Mulindwa is a key pillar in our football,” Munyagwa said.
The former Kawempe South MP’s comments come amid growing criticism of FUFA’s leadership, especially following the backlash over the now-abandoned Uganda Premier League format.
