World No. 2 and four-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner will skip Italy’s bid for a third consecutive Davis Cup title (18-23 November), prioritizing “extra preparation time” ahead of the 2026 Australian Open.
Sinner, 24, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, told Sky Sport Italy: “It wasn’t an easy decision, but after Turin, the goal is to get off on the right foot in Australia.
A week of preparation… can make all the difference.”
Captain Filippo Volandri respects the decision, noting the team—which includes top singles players Lorenzo Musetti (World No. 8) and Flavio Cobolli (World No. 22)—is ready to fight in their quarter-final against Austria.
Sinner’s withdrawal adds to recent concerns voiced by players like Jack Draper regarding the demanding tennis calendar. In contrast, World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has been named on Spain’s team.
