A sweeping, multi-state investigation into illegal sports betting and organized crime-linked poker games has led to the arrest of an active NBA player and a prominent NBA coach, the FBI announced Thursday.
The arrests are part of a massive “coordinated takedown across 11 states,” according to FBI Director Kash Patel, who called the operation “extraordinary.”
Miami Heat player Terry Rozier is one of six people arrested in an alleged sports betting ring involving irregularities and potential “injury faking” by players.
Federal investigators have been scrutinizing unusual betting activity surrounding a March 2023 game where Rozier, then with the Charlotte Hornets, played only nine minutes and scored five points against the New Orleans Pelicans due to a sore right foot.
Officials are probing whether Rozier manipulated his performance for an illegal gambling scheme. Before that specific game, Rozier was averaging a significant 35 minutes of playing time and approximately 21 points per game.
In a separate but related case, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups is among 31 people charged in connection with an illegal poker game operation with ties to former players and organized crime figures.
The NBA has been contacted for comment regarding the dual-pronged federal probe that has rocked the league.
The arrests highlight a significant crackdown on illegal gambling activities touching one of the United States’ top professional sports organizations.
