Ugandan boxer Aziz Ringo continued his explosive run at the Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships, storming into the finals after another dominant first-round victory.
The grandson of former Ugandan president Idi Amin, Ringo has lived up to his fighting heritage, winning both of his bouts via referee stoppage (RSC).
His latest triumph came on Thursday when the referee halted his contest in the opening round against Mbangi Mukewa of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ringo’s win capped a strong day for Uganda, with several compatriots also booking their places in the finals.
Murungi Kasim earned a 4:1 victory over Kenya’s Paul Omondi, while Muduwa Brenda impressed with a first-round RSC win against Tanzania’s Aisha Issa. Farahat Manirola added to Uganda’s tally after a commanding 5:0 decision over another Tanzanian, Kingu Lucas.
However, not all went Uganda’s way. Namutebi Erina bowed out after a 5:0 loss to Kenya’s Cynthia Nmiai in the 63kg category, while Kanabi Alex was stopped in the first round by Kenya’s Boniface Mogunde in the 71kg division. Matovu Livingstone also suffered a narrow 2:3 defeat to Diouf Mumi of Kenya in the 51kg category.
Ringo and his teammates will now aim to turn their finals berths into gold as Uganda looks to assert regional dominance in the ring.
