Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has signed a contract extension that could keep him at the club until 2030, despite being banned for breaching betting rules.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle in July 2023 for £55m, was suspended for 10 months in October 2023 by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
The club supported him throughout his suspension, and the Italian agreed to a one-year extension until 2029, with an option for an additional year to 2030, as a way to repay the club’s faith.
His commitment provides Newcastle added protection after Tonali became a pivotal player under head coach Eddie Howe.
Since returning to action 14 months ago, Howe shifted him to the crucial number six role, a move that proved key to the club winning a major domestic trophy and qualifying for the Champions League last season.
Tonali’s physicality and tactical understanding make him “indispensable,” according to Howe, with stats showing he leads the team in carrying the ball and is a top contributor in passing and defensive duties.
The extension signals the club’s intent to retain its best players following the departure of Alexander Isak last summer.
