West Ham United’s defeat at Leeds on Friday cemented their worst start to a season in 52 years, leaving the club 19th in the Premier League table.
New manager Nuno Espirito Santo remains winless after three consecutive losses since taking over in September.
The club’s four points from nine games is a joint-worst tally in its league history, a total previously only recorded in seasons that ended in relegation.
Nuno admitted the situation requires drastic action, stating, “We must change our attitude… work harder.”
The biggest problem is defense, with the Hammers conceding 20 goals—a staggering nine from corners—a Premier League record at this stage.
Former player Rob Green called the team’s tactical setup, which included inverted full-backs, “perilous” and nonsensical.
Captain Jarrod Bowen emphasized the need for a change in mentality: “We’re in a real situation and we have to face the reality of that. We’re in trouble now.”
Nuno is under immediate pressure to prevent a slide toward the club’s first top-flight relegation since 2012.
