Britain’s Cameron Norrie described his upset victory over World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz as the “biggest win of my career” after reaching the Paris Masters last 16.
Norrie, ranked 31st, came back from a set down to defeat the Spaniard 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the ATP Masters 1,000 event.
The win is Norrie’s first-ever over a reigning world number one.
“To get the biggest win of my career… I am pleased with the way I did it,” said Norrie, who bounced back from a forearm injury that caused him to miss the Olympics and US Open last year.
He credited a pre-match walk with his coach for helping him feel “relaxed” while serving for the victory.
Alcaraz, who was playing his first match back from an ankle injury, admitted he was “really disappointed about my level,” committing 54 unforced errors.
The defeat means Alcaraz risks losing his number one ranking if his rival Jannik Sinner goes on to win the Paris tournament.
Norrie advances to face the winner between wildcards Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech.
