Alpesh Ramjani Becomes First Ugandan Cricketer to Play in Nepal

By Daniel Nyeko

Alpesh Ramjani, Uganda’s dynamic all-rounder, has etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Ugandan to feature in the Nepal Premier League (NPL), the country’s top-tier T20 competition.

This milestone marks another highlight in the left-arm spinner’s fast-rising profile on the global cricket scene.

Ramjani is a key member of Uganda’s national men’s cricket team, the Cricket Cranes, having made his debut in 2022 under former head coach Laurence Mahatlane.

He holds the record for the most international wickets taken in a calendar year by a Ugandan, finishing 2023 with an impressive 55 wickets.

His outstanding performances earned him a nomination for the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year, an award eventually won by his idol, India’s Suryakumar Yadav.

Born in Mumbai, India, Ramjani relocated to Uganda to pursue his cricket career. His stellar displays for the Cricket Cranes helped Uganda qualify for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies and caught the attention of cricket franchises beyond East Africa.

Now representing Chitwan Rhinos in the NPL, Ramjani will gain invaluable experience playing alongside former England top-order batter Dawid Malan and against other top international talents.

This exposure not only benefits his own growth but also paves the way for more Ugandan players to explore opportunities in major global cricket leagues.

Ramjani’s debut in the NPL is a groundbreaking moment for Ugandan cricket, showing that talent from emerging nations can reach new heights.

His journey serves as an inspiration for young cricketers across Uganda, proving that hard work and dedication can open doors to international franchise cricket.
