Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reversed his previous suggestion that he was concerned about his squad’s depth, now insisting he is “completely happy” with the team’s quality ahead of Saturday’s match against Aston Villa.
The U-turn follows a challenging week that saw the Reds lose 3-0 to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, a match where Slot fielded a largely inexperienced, youthful side and later implied the selection “gives a little bit of insight” into his options.
The champions have lost six of their last seven games across all competitions, dropping to seventh in the Premier League despite a record-breaking £415 million summer spending spree.
This investment included the British-record £125 million signing of striker Alexander Isak.
Slot now attributes the poor form to bad luck with injuries to key players (including Alisson, Frimpong, and Gravenberch) and issues like Isak missing pre-season.
“I am a firm believer that 20 or 21 players is enough but you have to keep them fit,” Slot stated, arguing the non-availability of several players has forced him to rely heavily on the same few.
The manager is under increasing pressure, with fans openly questioning his suitability to lead the club forward.
