Buffaloes Hand KOBs Comeback Victory in Uganda Cup Thriller

Toyota Buffaloes and KCB KOBs gave rugby fans their money’s worth during round three’s tie in the 2025 Uganda Cup on Saturday evening at the former Legends/Kampala Rugby Club.

The first half was a slow drag. The packs disrupted each other’s set pieces while the backs’ kicking exchanges exposed their backfield inefficiencies.

It ended tryless with a penalty aside from veteran Joseph Aredo and youngster Hussein Shein.

But the second half was mouthwatering. Substitutions from both technical benches, most notably Shafiq Okole and Douglas Musoke, played with the handbrake off and got the fans to their feet in excitement.

Musoke’s lung-bursting run from his own 22-metre line resulted in a Moses Olweny try three minutes after the break. Then Shein added a penalty five minutes later to make it 11-03.

Aredo struck a penalty in the fifty-first minute and the score stood at 11-06 on the hour mark.

Buffaloes had KOBs on the ropes for majority of the half and looked poised to clinch victory. Shein kicked his third penalty for them to lead by 14-06.

However, fifteen minutes to full time, the Kyadondo outfit simply handed the whip to their opponents to pull off a breathtaking comeback.

First, Ivan Odhiambo saw yellow for attempting a tackle from an offside position. And immediately after, Okole’s individual brilliance got KOBs their first try. Ibrahim Khemis converted easily to make it a one-point match.

Then Joseph Teko also got yellow for a dangerous tackle. KOBs made that two-man advantage count and Khemis delivered the goods off the tee again for a 16-14 comeback victory.

Barring any calamities, KOBs and Buffaloes will progress to the knockouts but the contest for top spot in Pool C is far from over.
