The Los Angeles Dodgers cemented their status as MLB’s dominant team, clinching their second straight World Series and third in six years with a dramatic 5-4 extra-innings victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 on Saturday.
The heavily-favored Dodgers, featuring stars like Shohei Ohtani and World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, had to fight until the very end.
They were down to their final two outs in the ninth inning when shortstop Miguel Rojas hit a crucial solo home run to tie the game. Catcher Will Smith then smashed the eventual winning solo shot in the 11th.
“For us to do it again under immense pressure says a lot about this group,” first baseman Freddie Freeman stated, celebrating the team becoming the first back-to-back champions since the New York Yankees in 2000.
Manager Dave Roberts praised the team’s resilience: “We just kept fighting… We’ve done something that hasn’t been done in decades.”
The Dodgers’ championship parade is scheduled for Monday in Los Angeles.
