Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) skipper Ronald Obedgiu rose to the occasion with a captain’s performance, scoring a brilliant brace to inspire the defending champions to a 2-0 win over Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in the Pepsi University Football League on Wednesday in Nkozi.
The Saints, who came into the fixture under pressure to keep pace with early group leaders, showed composure and tactical discipline from start to finish.
Obedgiu opened the scoring midway through the first half with a well-taken finish and doubled the advantage shortly after the break, sealing the hosts’ second win of the campaign.
The victory lifted Uganda Martyrs to seven points, drawing them level with Kampala University (KU) at the top of Group A, as the early race for knockout qualification begins to take shape.
For MUST, the defeat marked their first loss of the season, following positive results in their opening two matches.
Despite showing flashes of quality and pushing forward for a response in the second half, MUST struggled to break through UMU’s experienced and well-organized defense.
Uganda Martyrs, who clinched the title last season, looked closer to the dominant side they are expected to be, with midfield control, strong defensive structure, and decisive finishing highlighting their growing confidence.
Today’s fixtures promise more excitement, as Kabale University seeks their first win of the season against high-flying Muteesa I Royal University, who are among the early pace-setters in the group.
Kabale will be eager to capitalize on home support, but Muteesa’s form presents a tough challenge. With the group heating up, the next fixtures will be crucial in shaping the qualification race.
