Namuwongo Blazers are one victory away from their first National Basketball League title after defeating City Oilers 71–68 in a gripping Game Five showdown at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday.
The Blazers now lead the best-of-seven Finals 3–2, completing a remarkable comeback after losing the opening two games to the ten-time back-to-back champions.
The game opened at a frantic pace, with both sides exchanging baskets early. Anthony Chukwubuka Chukwurah’s free throws gave Namuwongo a 25–23 lead after the first quarter, before the teams went into halftime locked at 41–41.
The third quarter turned into a defensive battle. After nearly five scoreless minutes, Oilers’ Kurt Curry broke the drought with a jumper, but Joel Lukoji responded with a deep three-pointer.
James Okello then hit a buzzer-beater that handed Blazers a 58–54 advantage entering the final quarter.
Oilers mounted a late push, yet Namuwongo held firm to seal the narrow win that now puts them in control of the championship race.
Okello led the Blazers with 17 points, while Lukoji and Chukwurah each added 10. Curry scored 15 points and Chad Bowie 14 for the Oilers.
Game Six will be played on Wednesday at Lugogo. A win would hand the Blazers their maiden championship, while the Oilers must triumph to force a decisive Game Seven.
