Wolverhampton Wanderers’ search for a new manager hit a snag after Gary O’Neil pulled out of a surprise return to the club.
The 42-year-old, sacked in December 2024, was close to agreeing a deal to replace Vitor Pereira, who was dismissed after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat left Wolves bottom of the Premier League with just two points from 10 games.
O’Neil, who is still being paid by the club on severance, has now withdrawn from talks.
Attention at Molineux is shifting, with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag now a candidate of interest.
Wolves are continuing dialogue with several other managers, including at least one from the stable of high-profile agent Jorge Mendes.
Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards was also a contender but has distanced himself from the role, citing his commitment to Boro and the likely significant compensation fee.
