Cricket Uganda has acquired a fifteen-acre piece of land in Nakasajja-Gayaza on which to build the federation’s first permanent address.
Cricket Uganda put pen to paper on November 1, 2025, ending, according to a press release, an “over twenty-year search” for a dedicated home of the sport.”
The federation’s Land Board led by Ketan Shukla and Richard Okia’s “land identification team” had the support of majority of Cricket Uganda’s member clubs and the entire board through the Land Fund.
“We evaluated multiple options. Nakasajja stood out as it is 27km from Lugogo and 1km from the trading centre, has a natural stream ideal for water harvesting, and the terrain naturally lends itself to sports. The scenery is natural, green and perfect for an iconic cricket environment,” Cricket Uganda CEO Evelyn Kabongerwa Shinyekwa said.
“This marks a historic moment for Ugandan cricket. All due diligence including surveys and environmental checks, passed smoothly. Uganda cricket can now breathe,” Cricket Uganda Chairperson Jackson Kavuma said.
Since time immemorial, cricket in Uganda has called the National Council of Sports-operated Lugogo Sports Complex home. Local and international cricket has also been played at other venues like Entebbe, Kyambogo and Jinja cricket ovals; and most recently Serenity Oval in Kamengo.
However, with the approaching redevelopment of Lugogo Sports Complex which the sport shared with social and music events, it was high time Cricket Uganda found a solution to the “homelessness.”
Cricket becomes the latest sport to find home outside Lugogo, following in the footsteps of FUFA (football) who have multiple facilities spread around the country.
Cricket Uganda’s Land Board is expected to announce details of the groundbreaking and phased development plan in due course.
The facility will house two international standard cricket ovals, plus supporting facilities like indoor nets and a clubhouse.
