NEC have officially ended their association with head coach Hussein Mbalangu, confirming that both parties agreed to a mutual termination of his contract.
The decision marks the end of a turbulent few weeks for the tactician, who had recently been handed a two-month suspension for his involvement in the Masaza Cup with Ssingo.
“We announce today that a decision has been made to mutually terminate our contract with Head Coach Hussein Mbalangu, effective immediately,” read part of a statement released by the club.
“In a joint agreement, the club has unconditionally relieved and released Coach Mbalangu from all obligations associated with his role as Head Coach,” the statement added.
Mbalangu’s exit closes a memorable chapter in NEC’s short but eventful top-flight journey.
The CAF A–licensed coach masterminded the club’s stunning second-place finish in the Uganda Premier League last season, a feat that cemented his reputation as one of the country’s shrewdest tacticians.
Having taken over in 2023 from Michael “Skills” Lukyamuzi, who had just guided NEC to promotion from the FUFA Big League, Mbalangu quickly turned the “Die Hards” into genuine contenders.
His side also reached the Stanbic Uganda Cup final in 2024, falling just short against eventual champions Kitara FC.
NEC are expected to name Mbalangu’s successor in the coming days as they look to stabilize and refocus ahead of the next phase of their campaign.
Before joining NEC, the experienced coach handled several clubs including Blacks Power, Mbarara City, Arua Hill SC, and Azam FC Bweyogerere, and also had a coaching stint in Somalia.
