Middlesbrough have rejected an approach from Wolverhampton Wanderers to speak to manager Rob Edwards, derailing the Premier League side’s search for a replacement for sacked Vitor Pereira.
Wolves, who are currently bottom of the Premier League, identified Edwards as their preferred candidate after former boss Gary O’Neil withdrew from consideration.
Middlesbrough, sitting third in the Championship, are determined to keep Edwards, who only took over in June.
A significant compensation fee would be required for the former Wolves player and coach, who famously led Luton Town to the Premier League in 2023.
Wolves remain winless after 10 games and face Chelsea on Saturday.
