Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton retired from the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, labeling his debut season with Ferrari a “nightmare.”
The Briton’s race was ruined early after he was hit by Carlos Sainz and later sustained further damage following a collision with Franco Colapinto, an incident for which he received a five-second penalty.
Despite a pit stop for a new front wing, a damaged floor forced his retirement on lap 39.
“This is a nightmare, and I have been living it for a while,” Hamilton told Sky Sports. “The flip between the dream… and the nightmare of the results we have had, the ups and downs, it’s challenging.”
The double retirement, which also saw teammate Charles Leclerc crash out, completed a miserable day for Ferrari, who now sit fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Hamilton, who has yet to finish on the podium this season, remains resilient, stating he “truly still believe[s] in this team” and foresees “something extraordinary up ahead.”
