James Overy, an 18-year-old Manchester United right-back, has received a shock call-up to the senior Australia squad for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia in the United States.
The selection is highly unusual because Overy has yet to play a senior first-team game for Manchester United, having only joined their academy last summer.
Socceroos coach Tony Popovic confirmed the decision, stating he was “impressed” with Overy’s recent performances at the Under-20 World Cup in Chile and wanted to “have a look at” the talent.
Overy, who previously played non-league football for Newton Abbot Spurs after moving from Australia, is one of seven uncapped players selected by Popovic as the team builds depth ahead of the next World Cup.
If he plays, Overy will join a small group of players who debuted for their country’s senior side before their club’s first team.
