Uganda’s representatives at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Basketball League Africa Zone 5 Qualifiers, the Magic Stormers, endured a disappointing campaign in Nairobi, exiting the tournament without a win after suffering a 70-50 defeat to Rwanda’s APR in their final game.
The loss capped a forgettable run for the Ugandan side, who managed four straight defeats, including a forfeit in their opening match against Burundi’s Gladiators due to a uniform issue.
Despite signing seven new players before the qualifiers, including experienced stars Hope Akello, Ruth Letaru, and Angella Zaina Lokwameri, as well as young talents like Shiprah Kiranda, it was a different case during the competition.
In Nairobi, the team had a short roster, with only eight players available throughout the tournament and missed some of the key signings, including Akello and Letaru.
Their most competitive showing came in the 55-68 defeat to Tanzania’s Fox Basketball Club, in their second game.
Christine Namyalo led the scoring with 18 points, while Sylvia Nakituuka and Joy Mupalia added 10 apiece. The Stormers showed fight, edging the second quarter 16-14, but turnovers and fatigue cost them in the second half.
Against hosts Kenya Ports Authority, the Stormers were outclassed 94-41 in a one-sided contest that underlined the gulf in quality.
KPA’s high-tempo play and defensive intensity left the Ugandans chasing the game from start to finish.
The final encounter with APR offered little respite, as the Rwandan side controlled proceedings throughout, leading 37-22 at halftime and sealing a 70-50 win despite determined efforts from Sylvia Nakituuka and Daphine Adong.
Despite the disappointing results, the tournament offered valuable exposure for the Ugandan side.
The team returns home with lessons to build on as they aim to strengthen their structure and competitiveness in future regional events.
