The Uganda Cubs have booked their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 World Cup after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Senegal, thanks to a first-half strike from Vipers SC attacking midfielder Abubakali Walusimbi.
Walusimbi broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the Round of 32 clash, calmly striking from the edge of the box to give Uganda an early advantage.
From that moment, Brian Ssenyondo’s side showed remarkable discipline and resilience to protect their lead against a persistent Senegal side.
Coming into the match as underdogs, just as they had been for most of the tournament, the Cubs once again rose to the occasion.
Their spirited display mirrored their impressive 1–0 win over France in their final Group K match, a result that had already turned heads on the global stage.
Playing at their first-ever World Cup, Uganda have now recorded two memorable victories, further cementing this campaign as the nation’s most historic youth football achievement to date – if not in Ugandan football at large.
While they may not have dominated possession or dictated the rhythm of the game, their tactical organisation and determination proved decisive.
Goalkeeper Waibi Edrisah was instrumental in securing the win, pulling off several crucial saves to deny Senegal’s attackers and preserve Uganda’s slender advantage.
His command of the penalty area and composure under pressure were vital as the Cubs held firm in the second half.
With the victory sealed, Uganda now await the winner of the Round of 32 tie between European heavyweights Germany and fellow African side Burkina Faso, a matchup that will determine their next opponent in the knockout stages.
The journey continues for the Pearl of Africa’s young stars, who have shown that belief, structure, and hard work can unsettle even the strongest footballing nations at this level.
