Joe Walker Relay Closes With Firm Call For Safer Roads in Uganda

The Joe Walker Remembrance Relay 2025 wrapped up at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel with a clear message that Uganda must act faster on road safety.

The annual event, held in memory of road crash victims and aligned with UN Global Road Safety Week, drew families, community groups, institutions, and corporate partners for a day focused on remembrance and action.

This year’s edition put fresh attention on the scale of the crisis. Uganda continues to lose an estimated fourteen people every day to road crashes, a toll that organisers described as both preventable and unacceptable.

The relay served as a tribute to those who have died while underlining the need for stronger protections on the road.

Teams walked symbolic stages of a sixty kilometre route that started and ended at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

Each group completed a ten or twenty kilometre interval before passing a baton to the next team, a gesture meant to show that responsibility for road safety is shared across society.

According to event lead Joseph Beyanga, proceeds from this year’s relay will fund essential supplies and care items for crash victims now receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital.

He said the contribution is intended to ensure that the event delivers practical help alongside awareness.

The Joe Walker movement has become a consistent force in wellness, community mobilisation, and road safety advocacy.

This year’s relay closed with a reminder that progress depends on collective action, and that every step taken brings the country closer to safer roads.
