Rebecca Chelangat delivered Uganda’s standout moment at the Islamic Solidarity Games after winning gold in the women’s 10,000m on Monday night in Riyadh.
She crossed the line in 32:11.41 at Prince Faisal Bin Fahad Stadium, giving Uganda its first athletics medal of the competition and pushing the overall tally to seven.
The programme had opened with Leonard Chemutai in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. He finished fourth after a committed run that kept him in podium contention until the final laps.
Focus then moved to the women’s 10,000m, where Chelangat and teammate Annet Chelangat took to the track. Rebecca’s win became the main headline of the night, with Annet adding depth to Uganda’s presence in the race.
Uganda now shifts attention to the men’s 10,000m final. Abel Chebet and Samuel Simba Cherop line up later today as the team targets more medals.
