In a historic day for Ugandan football, the nation’s U17 teams, the Cubs, will be in action on two fronts tonight, Tuesday, November 18, aiming to secure monumental victories in the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar and the CECAFA AFCON U17 Qualifiers in Ethiopia.
In Qatar, the Uganda Cubs are set for a thrilling all-African Round of 16 clash against Burkina Faso at the Aspire Zone Pitch 5 at 3:30 PM Ugandan Time.
The team, already national heroes for their fairy-tale run, are looking to extend their unprecedented World Cup debut.
The Cubs arrive with confidence, having stunned global audiences with a group-stage win over France before eliminating Senegal 1-0 in the Round of 32.
The France victory was courtsry of James Bogere’s lone strike, while the Senegal win was anchored by a goal from Abubakali Walusimbi and a heroic, match-winning performance from goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi.
However, Coach Brian Ssenyondo faces a selection challenge as star forward Bogere is suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
“Every coach would love to have all his players available, especially the key ones,” Ssenyondo admitted. “We will miss him, but I have players to come in and do the job.”
In a significant boost however, captain Hamza Sengooba has been cleared to play after being stretchered off and hospitalised following the Senegal match.
Ssenyondo acknowledged the growing pressure but embraced it. “The pressure is there, but it’s positive and desired… We are motivated going into the game but well aware of the task ahead.”
Their opponents, Burkina Faso, carry their own formidable momentum after eliminating defending champions Germany.
Coach Oscar Barro is wary of the Ugandan threat, stating, “Uganda have made it to the Round of 16, which shows what a quality side they are.”
CECAFA Title Defense Continues in Ethiopia
Meanwhile, in the eastern Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa, the other Uganda Cubs squad will continue their defense of the CECAFA U17 AFCON Qualifiers title against Sudan at 5 PM.
Fresh off a commanding 4-0 opening victory over Burundi, where Thomas Ogema and captain Owen Mukisa each scored a brace, the Cubs are heavy favourites.
Under new Ghanaian head coach Layrea Kingston, the team has displayed ruthless attacking form that they will be eager to maintain.
Sudan, who suffered a heavy 6-0 loss to Tanzania in their opener, will need a vastly improved performance to contain the confident Ugandan side.
A win for the Cubs would all but guarantee their place in the semi-finals, keeping them on track to secure one of the region’s coveted spots at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
What’s at Stake?
For the Cubs in Qatar, a victory would etch their names deeper into Ugandan football folklore, securing a first-ever quarter-final berth at a FIFA World Cup at any level.
For the Cubs in Ethiopia, a win solidifies their status as tournament favourites and moves them one step closer to continental qualification.
