Work on the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium has moved into a decisive phase as contractors push through the structural stage of construction on one of Uganda’s key AFCON 2027 venues.
SAMCO, the Egyptian firm financing the project through a 36.4 million dollar facility from Afreximbank, is now erecting the main frame that will carry the stadium’s seating bowl and roof system.
Ground teams have already completed the substructure, including foundations and underground utilities, which cleared the way for the above ground build.
The focus at the site is now on formwork and reinforcement, with crews assembling molds and packing rebar for the concrete columns, beams and slabs that will hold the stadium’s weight.
Engineers are also preparing areas that will support the terraced seating.
Early sections of the sloped tiers are beginning to appear, shaping the stands and giving the venue its first recognisable outline.
Project supervisors say this stage is critical because it defines the stadium’s shape and capacity.
Once the frame is complete, the project will shift to the enclosure stage, which will involve installation of the roof trusses, exterior walls and façade elements. Interior fitting and finishing will follow.
Government officials maintain that the stadium remains on schedule and will be ready ahead of CAF’s inspections next year.
The project is part of Uganda’s wider sports infrastructure programme as the country works with Kenya and Tanzania to prepare for AFCON 2027.
