Rugby Uganda Cup: Heathens, Buffaloes Set Up Kyadondo Derby in Semi

Rugby Uganda Cup 2025 – Quarterfinal Results
• Q3: Platinum Credit Heathens 44-29 Lifeguard Rams
• Q4: Hippos 20-11 Toyota Buffaloes

Since the start of the 2025 edition, Platinum Credit Heathens’ title defence of the Rugby Uganda Cup has not been under major threat. They beat Impis (29-06), Kitgum Lions (57-06) and Victoria Sharks (35-17) in the round-robin phase to comfortably top Pool D.

Although the stakes were much higher in the knockout round, they still won their quarterfinal tie comfortably. Heathens beat Rams, 44-29 (HT: 22-14), on a hot Sunday afternoon at Kyadondo Rugby Club.

It was a repeat of the 2023 final which ended 57-22. Similarly, the defending champions asserted their authority once again.

Joseph Oyet (2), Joseph Odongo and Nicholas Kato (conversion by Julius Oyuk) scored for Heathens in the first half while Bakali Muhoozi and Hossana Opileni touched down for Rams. Both Rams’ tries converted by Opileni.

The second half was similar to the first: Heathens and Rams exchanging punches in a telephone booth. The forwards knocked each other while the backs ran around each other.

Oyuk, Trevor Ochan, Michael Amollo (conversion by Marvin Asaba), and Sulaiman Ngobi doubled Heathens’ score. Opileni added two tries (one converted by Francis Ankunda) and a penalty for Rams in a performance which earned him the Man Of The Match award.

Meanwhile, across the Nile at the new-look Damwaters Rugby Club, now rebranded to ‘Ruck Yard’, visitors Toyota Buffaloes knocked out Hippos by 20-11 (HT: 08-00).

This set up a Kyadondo derby in the semifinals; as the Heathens-Buffaloes brotherhood continues to evolve into a modern-day rugby rivalry.

The semifinal will be played on Saturday, November 29, with venues yet to be confirmed by URU. The expectation is for it to be held at Kyadondo, as it is home to both teams.

Stanbic Black Pirates will take on eternal rivals KCB KOBs in the other semifinal.
