Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye received a warm round of applause from his teammates after apologising for an extraordinary red card he earned during Monday’s 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Gueye was dismissed in the 13th minute for slapping teammate Michael Keane across the face—the first Premier League player sent off for striking a teammate in 17 years. The altercation followed a misplaced pass by Gueye.
Despite being down to 10 men for 85 minutes, Everton secured a historic victory, giving manager David Moyes his first win at Old Trafford as a visitor in 18 attempts.
In the dressing room post-match, Gueye specifically apologised to Keane and the rest of the squad for leaving them with a “monumental task,” prompting the team to applaud his words.
Though Moyes defended his player, saying he “likes my players fighting,” Gueye is likely to face a standard fine. He will serve a three-match ban and could miss more games if called up early for the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal.
Meanwhile, United defender Mathijs de Ligt criticised his team, stating they lacked “urgency” and efficiency in the loss, which halted their five-game unbeaten run.
